Our Team
The Avalon Gators Swim Team consists of approximately 180 swimmers who participate in the James River Aquatic Club (JRAC) league. We have 4 wonderful coaches that help our swimmers have a fun and competitive season.
To participate in the Avalon swim team, a swimmer must be able to safely cross one length of the pool using any stroke. Swimmers practice and compete in meets within their age groups. *IMPORTANT* all those signed up for swim team are required to participate in at least half of the meets the team will compete in this season. Out of 6 meets swimmers are required to participate in at least 3 meets. This can be in any combination your family chooses. While that is the minimum, the coaches encourage all swimmers to be open minded and participate in as many meets as possible.
If you have a child who wants to participate in the team but needs to work on completing a length of the pool, our Pre-Team (formerly known as Mini Mites) may be a good fit. This program offers more hands-on instruction with the coaches to help swimmers gain confidence to swim independently.
**NEW SWIMMER EVALUATIONS**
If your swimmer has never participated in a formal swim team, summer or year around, they will be asked to attend an evaluation session so that the coaches can properly place your child in the correct program (Team, Pre-Team or Lessons).
Evaluations will
be held on Saturday, April 26th at 12 p.m. at NOVA Regency. If you
cannot attend this date, you can make arrangements with the head coach. Please

If your child has been placed in Pre-Team after evaluations, please use the link below to register your child for Pre-Team.

In an effort to provide a smooth transition from Pre-Team to swim team for all of our swimmers, there have been a few changes made to the requirements for Pre-Team. We want to make sure all of our Pre-Team swimmers are ready and prepared when the time comes to move up the team. Swimmers will need to be at least 4 years old, who are comfortable and safe in the water. Swimmers will need to be able to complete 1 WIDTH of the pool using freestyle with minimal to no assistance. It is at the discretion of the coaches whether Pre-Team is the appropriate placement for each swimmer. As Pre-Team is the bridge to the regular swim team, Pre-Team, will be participating in the last home meet of the season. Please note it will be at the coach’s discretion to move your child from Pre-Team to Team in the middle of the season.
If a swimmer is not ready for Pre-Team, Avalon offers some great options for private and group lessons for swim instruction.
