The day has finally arrived - Happy summer to all!
You all know what that means - morning practices will start this Monday (the times are noted in the Coaches Section below). Also, tennis is offering lessons following each age group's practice time so that your children can both swim and play. You will find that info in the links section on avalongators.swim-team.us.
CCV is headed our way this Monday evening for our 2nd meet of the season. Let's show them some great Gator hospitality as we go head to head in the pool. They are a larger team but I know we have even bigger heart!
Please by at Avalon by 5:30pm.
Warm-ups for us begin at 5:45pm & the meet starts at 6:30pm.
To try & ward off the storms, I will remind you of our bad weather policy: 20 mins for thunder, 30 mins from the last lightning. It is always safest to wait in your car & we will let you know of any decisions that are made. Lastly, we cannot postpone a meet until 1 hour has passed even if there is no end to the storm insight.
Thank you for all your support.
Sarah Whelan
A Note from Your Coaches
Gators-
Congratulations again on a great meet and a big win against Ginter Park, hopefully the first of many to come this season! A special thanks to all the parent volunteers who braved the heat of the day as well as storm delays to make our first home meet a success for all.
As we head towards our second meet of the season at home against CCV on Monday, here are a few helpful tips and reminders to keep in mind:
1) Hydration and rest on the day of the meet remains key to success! Monday is not the day to spend outside in the heat becoming dehydrated and sunburned. On a related note, a good night's sleep on Sunday is essential for successful swims on Monday night.
2) Summer league meets have an unfortunate tendency to overlap with dinnertime, so remember to have an early meal before you come to Avalon to warm up, and stock up on HEALTHY snacks and drinks to bring along, especially if you will be swimming in the later events. Other items to pack include goggles and Avalon cap, an Avalon t-shirt if you have one, a towel, and warm clothes such as a sweatshirt in case it gets cooler after dark.
3) In the second meet of the regular season, the novice stroke is always Breaststroke. This usually means lots of DQ's, especially for our youngest swimmers. Here are two simple tips from Coach Rachel on how to "keep it legal" and avoid a DQ in the breaststroke.
1. Be sure to touch the wall with both hands at the SAME time on the breaststroke turn and finish.
2. Swimmers are allowed only ONE underwater pull and kick off every start or turn during the race, older swimmers know this as the 'underwater pullout'.
On a final note, morning practice begins on Monday at 8:00- 8:45 for the midgets, 8:45-9:30 for the mites, and 9:30-10:30 for intermediates, juniors and seniors. Afternoon practice will continue to be offered at the regular time. Since there sometimes fewer swimmers at morning practice, swimming in the morning offers a great opportunity to swim a less crowded lane and receive some extra attention for the coaching staff.
See at the Pool!
